Brake winches have design features for additional safety and convenience. Brake winches have a friction brake which automatically applies a constant, positive holding action. The load remains exactly in position when handle is released. Brake winches should be used in place of ratchet winches in applications where a danger would be created if the winch load were allowed to freewheel. Brake winches are ideal for applications such as raising and lowering retractable swing keels on sailboats. All D-L brake winches are built for multipurpose hauling and lifting operations. They are not to be used as hoists for lifting, supporting or transporting people, or for loads over areas where people could be present.
